Bhabani Prasad Bhattacharya was born in Joydebpur, Dhaka. He Joined revolutionary organization in his student life. He went to Darjeeling in 1934 along with two other activists with the objective of assassinating the notorious Governor Anderson. They fired on Anderson in Lebong Race ground on  August 5, 1934. The shots misfired and all three were arrested. In the trial, one of the associates was released scot free for confessing his guilt, the second one was imprisoned and Bhabani Prasad was awarded capital punishment. He was hanged in Rajshahi Central jail on February 3, 1935. History will always remember him as a great patriot.
During the British period, the building was known as ‘ Anderson House’. After independence, on 12.09.1969, it was renamed as Bhabani Bhawan after the name of Bhabani Prasad Bhattacharya. The historic Bhabani Bhawan now houses the West Bengal Police Head Quarter. Hon’ble Chief Minister of West Bengal, Smt. Mamata Banerjee, inaugurated the West Bengal Police Directorate at Bhabani Bhawan, Alipur, Kolkata on February 24,2014.
